Statement of the TURKPA Secretary General on the Decision of the Milli Majlis of Azerbaijan to Suspend Cooperation with the European Parliament
4
We express our support for the decision adopted today by the Milli Majlis of Azerbaijan to officially suspend cooperation with the European Parliament across all areas, to cease participation in the activities of the EU-Azerbaijan Parliamentary Cooperation Committee, and to initiate procedures for the termination of its membership in the EuroNest Parliamentary Assembly.
This decision is justified in light of the continued biased and unsubstantiated approach demonstrated by the European Parliament towards Azerbaijan in recent years. Over the past six years, the European Parliament has been pursuing a hostile approach against Azerbaijan and has adopted more than 10 politically motivated resolutions unjustifiably attacking the country, including the most recent resolution of 30 April 2026.
Such a stance not only disregards the fundamental principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity and non-interference in internal affairs, but also run counter to the peace and normalization process between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
Parliamentary assemblies are expected to serve as a platform for constructive dialogue and good-faith cooperation, including with the parliaments of non-member states. Regrettably, the European Parliament has failed to demonstrate spirit of genuine engagement, but instead resorted to targeting Azerbaijan.
We emphasize that such conduct does not contribute to effective parliamentary relations and to call on the European Parliament to refrain from such kind of practice.
Ambassador Ramil Hasan,
Secretary General of the Parliamentary Assembly of Turkic States
