On 5-9 April 2025, the TURKPA delegation participated in the 150th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
Hosted by the parliament of Uzbekistan, the Assembly brought together nearly 1,400 delegates, including approximately 740 parliamentarians from around 130 countries, to address global challenges under the theme "Parliamentary Action for Social Development and Justice".
The 150th Assembly of the IPU commenced with an inaugural ceremony, graced by the welcoming speeches of the Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan Tanzila Narbayeva, President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Tulia Ackson, and the IPU Secretary General Martin Chungong, who shared their views on the relevance of the issues included in the Assembly’s agenda. Head of Parliament Tanzila Narbayeva underscored the significance of hosting the IPU Assembly in Uzbekistan for the first time, highlighting it as a testament to the nation's commitment to democratic reforms and active participation in global parliamentary dialogue.
On 7 April 2025, President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev delivered a keynote address at the 150th Assembly of the IPU, emphasizing the critical role of parliaments in upholding global peace, justice, and social progress. Referencing the Assembly’s central theme, he highlighted urgent global issues such as poverty, inequality, climate change, and regional conflicts. In this context, the President proposed several strategic initiatives, including the creation of a Global Platform for Youth Parliaments, the advancement of gender equality through increased female participation, the development of an international legal framework for AI ethics, and the reinforcement of inter-parliamentary cooperation to promote sustainable development.
During the Assembly, participants actively engaged in sessions of all statutory bodies, including the Governing Council, Standing Committees, the Committee on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians, the Forum of Women Parliamentarians, and the Forum of Young Parliamentarians. These meetings facilitated in-depth discussions on pressing global issues such as conflict resolution, climate change, gender equality, and the ethical governance of artificial intelligence. Notably, the Assembly provided a platform for member parliaments to exchange best practices and reinforce collaborative efforts towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The Assembly concluded with the adoption of the Tashkent Declaration, reaffirming the commitment of member parliaments to promote social development, justice, and inclusive governance worldwide.
