On 26 and 27 June 2024, the delegation of TURKPA comprised of member of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan Malahat Ibrahimgizi, member of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye Zeynep Yıldız and Secretary of the TURKPA Commission on Environment, Natural Resources and Health Protection Aynura Abutalibova took part at the Global Conference of Women Parliamentarians organized by the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) and the Doha-based UN Program Office on Parliamentary Engagement in Preventing and Countering Terrorism in cooperation with the Shura Council in Doha, State of Qatar. The Conference was held under the theme “The Role of Women Parliamentarians in the Development, Implementation, and Oversight of Counter-Terrorism and Prevention of Violent Extremism Legislation, Policies, and Strategies”. The two-day event brought together women parliamentarians - members and former members of the national parliaments of UNOCT member states, members of parliamentary committees on security and defense, representatives of parliamentary assemblies, members of the Counter-Terrorism Coordination Mechanism of Parliamentary Assemblies, representatives of UN agencies - UN Women, UN Development Programme (UNDP), Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED), Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), civil society organizations and leading experts from international research and academic institutions. The opening session was attended by the Speaker of the Shura Council Hassan bin Abdullah Al Ghanim, Deputy Speaker of the Shura Council Dr. Hamda bin Hassan Al Sulaiti and representatives of national parliaments, parliamentary unions, and relevant regional and international organizations participating in the conference. The conference focused on promoting the equal and meaningful participation of women parliamentarians at all stages of the development of national laws and policies related to countering terrorism and preventing violent extremism conducive to terrorism (CT/PCVE), strengthening the role of parliamentarians in the development, implementation, and oversight of CT/PCVE legislation, policies and strategies and facilitating the establishment of the CT/PCVE Network of Women Parliamentarians. The crucial aim of the conference was to enhance the participation of women parliamentarians in formulating and implementing policies and legislation, exchanging experiences and good practices between women parliamentarians from different countries, and promoting awareness and education about the importance of women's role in combating terrorism. Members of the TURKPA delegation Malahat Ibrahimgizi and Zeynep Yıldız delivered speeches at the sessions “Challenges, gaps and necessary measures” and “Coordination and partnership” reflecting the best practices on women’s role in developing strategies to counter terrorism and violent extremism.
