TURKPA attended the Fifth Counter-Terrorism Coordination Meeting of Parliamentary Assemblies and Third Policy Dialogue

On 8-9 May 2024, Acting Deputy Secretary General Saky Sadykov took part in the Fifth Counter-Terrorism Coordination Meeting of Parliamentary Assemblies and Third Policy Dialogue in Istanbul organized by the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) with the support of the Shura Council of the State of Qatar, and in cooperation with the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE PA).
The two-day, multi-session event brought together parliamentarians from around the world, representatives of inter-parliamentary organizations and authoritative experts.
The event was moderated by the Chief of the UNOCT Programme Office for Parliamentary Engagement David Alamos. Member of the Shura Council of the State of Qatar Dr. Ali bin Fetais Almarri and OSCE PA Vice-President, Chair of the Ad Hoc Committee on Counter-Terrorism and the Coordination Mechanism of Parliamentary Assemblies Reinhold Lopatka also delivered welcoming remarks.
In the event aimed at enhancing cooperation among parliamentary assemblies on countering terrorism and preventing violent extremism, the importance of sharing information, coordinating actions, strengthening partnerships, and reinforcing determination in this struggle was emphasized. The participants discussed key regional security trends and terrorism-related issues, highlighting the importance of ensuring and protecting human rights in countering terrorism and preventing violent extremism. The discussions also focused on assessing experiences in combating violent extremism and exploring opportunities for international cooperation in counter-terrorism.
During the event, UNOCT also introduced its new parliamentary handbook on "UN Security Council Resolution 1373" (2001) on countering terrorism. This Handbook serves as a reference tool for parliamentarians in proposing, discussing, amending, and adopting legislation and national strategies to counter terrorism and violent extremism in all its forms. On the sidelines of the event, TURKPA delegation met with Prof. Dr. Kamil Aydın, member of the Turkish delegation to the OSCE PA, Vice-Chairman of the Ad Hoc Committee on Countering Terrorism.
