Secretary General attended International Parliamentary Conference in Baku

On 7 December 2024, Secretary General Mehmet Süreyya Er attended the International Parliamentary Conference on “Parliamentarism: Traditions and Perspectives” hosted by the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The conference brought together around 100 representatives from the parliaments of 13 countries and international organizations. The event focused on the role of parliaments in global processes, the development of parliamentary traditions, the potential of parliamentary diplomacy, and the contribution of the discussions in the context of contemporary global challenges. Opening the event with a welcoming speech, Chairperson of the Milli Majlis, TURKPA Chairperson-in-Office Sahiba Gafarova greeted the participants of the conference. She stated that the role of parliaments in the political life of countries is undeniable, as they actively participate in governance by fulfilling legislative functions. During the conference, participants highlighted the strong cooperation of the Milli Majlis with parliaments of other countries and international organizations. In this context, the pivotal role of TURKPA was emphasized as a significant organization that engages parliamentary diplomacy by fostering dialogue not only among member parliaments, but also with other inter-parliamentary institutions, thereby contributing to regional cooperation. Secretary General Mehmet Süreyya Er also delivered a speech at the conference, extending the sincerest congratulations on the 106th anniversary of the Parliament of Azerbaijan. He emphasized the importance of strengthening inter-parliamentary dialogue to foster sustainable development and regional integration among the member states. Underlining the support of the Milli Majlis to the activities of TURKPA, Secretary General wished continued success in serving the people and strengthening democratic values.
