On 13 November 2024, Deputy Secretary General Saky Sadykov took part in the High-Level Dialogue on Advancing the Mountain Agenda and Mainstreaming the theme of Mountains and Climate Change, organized by Kyrgyzstan jointly with Azerbaijan and Mongolia within the framework of the 29th session of the Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) taking place from 11 to 22 November 2024 in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The event was attended by the President of the Kyrgyz Republic Sadyr Zhaparov, the President of Mongolia Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh, the President of Nepal Ram Chandra Paudel, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov and other high-ranking officials.
In his speech, President Sadyr Zhaparov called on the international community to step up support for mountainous countries that are most vulnerable to climate change, despite their minimal contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions.
In his turn, Minister Jeyhun Bayramov noted that such disasters as the melting of glaciers in the mountains as well as the resulting floods and landslides required the adoption of systemic measures and stated the need to make greater efforts to protect people living in mountainous areas as well as to strengthen cooperation in finding solutions.
The main topics of COP29 are measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, climate finance, technological innovation in energy, education of the younger generation and support for youth initiatives aimed at combating climate change.
As part of his participation in the event, Saky Sadykov visited the national pavilion under the general theme “Kyrgyzstan: Sustainable Mountain Development”, as well as the pavilions of other countries, where presentations on current issues on the climate agenda are held with participation of ministries and departments.
СOP29 is attended by 72,000 people from all over the world, including leaders from more than 100 countries.
United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. There are now 198 Parties to the Convention. The Conference of Parties (COP) is the highest body that oversees the implementation of the Convention and is held annually unless the Parties decide otherwise.
