On 5 October 2026, Secretary of the TURKPA Commission on Legal Affairs and International Relations Dr. Kadir Yaman participated in the international conference “Women in the History of Azerbaijan’s Parliamentarism”, organized in Baku by the Baku Branch of the IPA CIS International Institute for Monitoring Democracy Development (IPA CIS IIMDD).
The conference brought together members of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan, representatives of international organizations and national institutions, as well as scholars, researchers and experts.
In his speech, Dr. Kadir Yaman emphasized that the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic’s historic decision in 1918 to grant women voting rights served as a pioneering legacy and a shared reference point for the entire Turkic world. He also highlighted the efforts of the TURKPA Women Parliamentarians Group in promoting equal opportunities for men and women and enhancing women’s participation in decision-making processes across member states.
Participants discussed the legal and institutional foundations for advancing women’s rights and political participation, the historical role of women in Azerbaijani parliamentarism, and their contribution to state and society building. The discussions also addressed gender equality, women’s empowerment and the importance of preserving this legacy while promoting women’s meaningful participation in contemporary public life.
The event concluded with an awards ceremony recognizing the winners of an essay competition among schoolchildren on the theme “The Role of Azerbaijani Women in State and Society Building.” The initiative engaged younger generations in reflecting on the historical and contemporary contributions of women to the development of Azerbaijan.
