TURKPA EOM met with Chairman of CEC of Uzbekistan

On 25 October 2024, the TURKPA Election Observation Mission (EOM) met with the Chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of the Republic of Uzbekistan Zayniddin Nizamkhodjaev.
The Chairman of the CEC welcomed the Mission members and provided an overview of the election preparations for the country’s representative bodies. He informed on the newly introduced mixed electoral system for the elections to the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan, combining proportional representation and majoritarian components, with 75 members elected in single-mandate constituencies and 75 from a nationwide constituency through closed party lists. He also noted the changes in the structure of election administration and the increase of the quota for women from 30% to 40% during nomination of candidates by political parties.
Zayniddin Nizamkhodjaev reported that a total of 875 candidates were registered for the parliamentary elections, including 375 contesting in single-mandate constituencies and 500 through party lists. A total of 11,028 polling stations were established, along with 57 polling stations abroad in 40 countries. The Chairman of the CEC touched on the early voting process for those who were unable to vote at the polling stations of their residence on election day and noted that the early voting had been held from 16 to 23 October. He informed that over 850 international observers had been accredited for the parliamentary elections. He also briefed on the “E-saylov” information system, which had been developed to digitize the interaction of participants of electoral process.
In its turn, the Mission extended its best wishes for a successful election process.
The TURKPA EOM is composed of the parliamentarians from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Türkiye – Ahliman Amiraslanov, Aghalar Valiyev (Azerbaijan), Kudaibergen Bexultanov (Kazakhstan), Azizbek Tursunbaev (Kyrgyzstan), Osman Mesten, Mahmut Rıdvan Nazırlı, Kadim Durmaz, Harun Özgür Yıldızlı, Filiz Kılıç, Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu (Türkiye), TURKPA Secretary General Mehmet Süreyya Er, parliamentary staff members and other representatives of the TURKPA Secretariat. The Mission is headed by the member of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye Osman Mesten.
