TURKPA participated in the Second Global Forum on Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation in Achieving SDGs

On 30 November 2023, TURKPA delegation headed by Acting Deputy Secretary General Saky Sadykov took part in the Second Global Forum on Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation in Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals organized jointly by the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the UN Office in Uzbekistan, the OSCE Office in Uzbekistan and "Acted" NGO, in Tashkent.

The event was attended by parliamentarians from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Türkiye, Uzbekistan, Belarus, China, Croatia, Russia, Tajikistan and Spain, representatives of interparliamentary organizations, international organizations and civil society institutions, authoritative experts and specialists.

Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan Tanzila Narbaeva read out the message of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev to the Forum participants.

Secretary General Mehmet Süreyya Er addressed the opening ceremony through a video message. The opening ceremony was also addressed by Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan Tanzila Narbaeva, Speaker of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan Nurdinjon Ismoilov, acting UN Resident Coordinator in Uzbekistan Consuelo Vidal Bruce in person, while Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Martin Chungong, President of the UN Economic and Social Council Paula Narvaez, President of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly Pia Kauma, Chairperson of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, Chairperson of the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly Valentina Matvienko and President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Tiny Kox sent video messages.

In his address, Secretary General Mehmet Süreyya Er underlined the crucial and unique role of parliaments and parliamentarians in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He noted that TURKPA member states attached great significance to the achieving of the SDGs, and reiterated the commitment and determination of TURKPA to further contribute to the objectives of the 2030 Agenda of Sustainable Development. Secretary General stressed the key role of ongoing reforms implemented under the leadership of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev in further development of the country which is one of the driving forces in achieving sustainable development in the region and expressed belief for full-fledged membership of the Parliament of Uzbekistan in the Assembly in the near future.

Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan Tanzila Narbaeva touched on the need to establish practical cooperation between parliaments, governments and civil society institutions in achieving the SDGs.

It was emphasized that a new mechanism for achieving the SDGs had been introduced in Uzbekistan, legal and institutional reforms had been implemented. A Parliamentary Commission has been established to monitor the implementation of national goals and objectives, as well as an effective mechanism for balancing interests in achieving the SDGs, and parliamentary and public control have been formed in this area.

The Forum included three sessions on the themes “The role of parliament and inter-parliamentary cooperation in promoting the effective implementation of the 2030 Global Agenda”, “Gender-specific and youth policies in accelerating progress towards achieving the SDGs” and “Interaction between parliament and civil society in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.”

The Forum concluded with the adoption of the Tashkent Communiqué, covering important aspects of inter-parliamentary cooperation in achieving the SDGs.
