On 6-7 December 2018, TURKPA delegation attended Parliamentary Meeting on the occasion of the Adoption of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration held in Rabat, Morocco.
Parliamentary Meeting was organized jointly by the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the Parliament of the Kingdom of Morocco. During the opening ceremony, Mr. Habib El Malki, President of the House of Representatives, Mr. Hakim Benchamach, President of the House of Councillors and Ms. Gabriela Cuevas, President of the IPU made speeches. Then the meeting continued with different sessions and panels on various topics related migration.
The event offered an opportunity for parliamentarians to learn about the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, which would be adopted on 10 and 11 December 2018 in Marrakech in accordance with the resolution adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations, at the end of its 72nd session, and about the specific actions and tools available to parliaments to implement the commitments contained in this document. The meeting also made contribution to the efforts of the international community for the implementation of the global Compact on migration.
TURKPA delegation represented at the parliamentary meeting by Mr. Mustafa Canbey, member of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey and member of the TURKPA Commission on Social, Cultural and Humanitarian Affairs, Mr. Nauryz Aidarov, TURKPA Deputy Secretary General and Mr. Emin Hasanov, Secretary of the TURKPA Commission on Environment and Natural Resources.
Mr. Mustafa Canbey made speeches during the Panel on global and regional challenges and implementation. In his speeches, Mustafa Canbey gave brief information on TURKPA and informed participants about TURKPA’s involvement in the migration issues and the importance of regional cooperation organizations. He mentioned that in order to prevent crisis and tragedy resulting from migration, there is a need to build strong cross border partnerships and regional cooperation mechanisms. In this regard, regional institutions can have a role and contribute international efforts.

During the parliamentary meeting, TURKPA delegation had informal meetings with the delegations of Kazakhstan and Turkey in IPU and with the delegation of IPA CIS.
At the end of the parliamentary meeting, there was adopted outcome document where parliamentarians from around the world committed themselves to using their power fully to help implement the Global Compact on Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration.
