Today, March 2, 2022, marks the 73th anniversary of the death of Nuri Paşa, known as “Liberator of Baku”, Commander-in-Chief of the Caucasian Islamic Army.

On September 15, 1918, Nuri Paşa, who became the Commander of the Caucasus Islamic Army made up of 12 thousand soldiers on the order of his elder brother Enver Paşa, then Minister of War, and liberated Baku and other provinces of Azerbaijan from enemy occupation in response to a plea from Azerbaijan and Dagestan for help from the Ottoman Empire, established a throne in the hearts of all Azerbaijanis.

Nuri Paşa was born in Istanbul on May 5, 1890, and graduated from the Monastir Military High School in 1909 with the rank of first lieutenant, and served in various regions in the Balkans. He participated in the Tripoli War in 1911. After the Ottoman Empire entered the First World War, he was given the rank of "Sultan’s aide". He took part in many battles against British, Italian and French forces while serving in Tripoli and Benghazi until 1917.

The memory of Nuri Paşa (Killigil), who was among the pioneers of the Turkish defense industry with the factories he established after the proclamation of the Republic of Türkiye, is kept alive both in Azerbaijan and in Türkiye.

On the 73rd anniversary of his death, we once again commemorate the Commander-in-Chief of the Caucasian Islamic Army Nuri Paşa and all our martyrs with mercy and gratitude.
