First meeting of the Commissions on Social Policy of TURKPA member parliaments held in Ankara

Under auspices of the Turkish Chairmanship in TURKPA, the first meeting of the members of the Commissions on Social Policy and Healthcare of the TURKPA member parliaments was held on 8 April 2014 in Ankara. Welcoming the participants, Head of the Commission on Social Affairs and Health of GNAT Mr. Necdet Ünüvar emphasized that a joint meeting of the specialized commissions of the member parliaments is being held for the first time. He stressed that such a meeting would contribute to sharing of experience and exchange of information along with identifying new areas of cooperation among the member countries.

Parliamentarians from the TURKPA member countries discussed structure and activities of the parliamentary commissions on social affairs, prospects of cooperation among the commissions and the role of parliaments in determining basic aspects of the national social policies.

In this framework, participants met with the Minister of Health Dr. Mehmet Müezzinoğlu, the Minister of Family and Social Policy Dr. Ayşenur İslam and the Deputy Minister of Labour and Social Security of Turkey Mr. Halil Etyemez. During meeting with parliamentarians, high officials of the Turkish government emphasized importance of the TURKPA’s mission and necessity to further improve relationships among the member countries.

Parliamentarians were also received by the TURKPA Chairman-in-Office and Speaker of GNAT Mr. Cemil Çiçek, where preparations for the upcoming Fifth Plenary Session of TURKPA were discussed.

Parliamentarians of the TURKPA member countries agreed to hold such meetings on annual basis.
